Curriculum

Curriculum Statement

Senior leaders, staff, pupils, parents and carers, have worked collaboratively to develop a shared vision for the curriculum, that we have collectively designed at Blaenhonddan Primary School.

Our curriculum intent is firmly rooted in the schools desire to give all children strong foundations from which they may become successful, independent learners for life. The school’s curriculum is broad and balanced, ensuring that pupils develop an integrated, cross-disciplinary approach to learning. Our curriculum provides pupils with opportunities to learn new skills and apply their knowledge positively and creatively. We will enable learners to gain a deep understanding of how to thrive in an increasingly complex and digital world.

Our curriculum is also designed to develop in our pupils a sense of belonging, not just in a physical or geographical sense but also the historic, cultural and social place which has shaped and continues to shape the community which our school inhabits. We aim to help our pupils make sense of their own identities and those of others, in our community, Wales and the across the world.

Assessment at our school identifies individual pupil's strengths, achievements and areas for improvement.  Assessment plays a fundamental role in enabling each learner to make progress at an appropriate pace, ensuring they are supported and challenged accordingly. Excellent learning opportunities and effective feedback enable learners to move gradually towards a more advanced state.

We robustly track the progress of each learner and through observations, discussions and planned activities, we enable the learner to develop and improve skills and knowledge over time. At Blaenhonddan we are developing a shared understanding of progression with pupils, staff, governors, parents and carers and our cluster of schools.  We want our pupils to celebrate where they are as learners but also have the confidence and aspiration to move their learning forward, with greater independence, growing sophistication, critical thinking and the ability to transfer learning to new contexts.

Vision Statement for Languages, Literacy and Communication (LLC)

Languages, Literacy and Communication will be at the heart of learning and teaching across the curriculum.

At Blaenhonddan, we will strive to inspire all learners to develop their literacy skills to enable them to:

  • Listen attentively
  • Speak with confidence and clarity
  • Read fluently for pleasure and information
  • Write creatively and imaginatively in a variety of writing styles

Our learners will acquire literacy skills for life-long learning.

Vision Statement for Languages, Literacy and Communication - Welsh

At Blaenhonddan we want children to be excited and enthused about the Welsh language to secure the feeling of 'cynefin'.  Children should speak Welsh, not because they have been asked to, but because they want to.

Our Criw Cymraeg will be important ambassadors for developing the Welsh language ethos. They will be key in helping to inspire an enthusiasm within the children.

Visitors to the school should be in no doubt that they are in a school in Wales and that all stakeholders are proud to be Welsh / live in Wales.

Mrs Rees-Jones

Language, Literacy and Communication (Welsh) Leader

Vision Statement for Mathematics and Numeracy

At Blaenhonddan, we aim to promote confidence and competence with numbers and the number system.  We will provide opportunities for the children to solve problems through decision making and reasoning in a range of contexts.  Children will develop a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered, presented and investigated.  They will explore features of shape and space and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts.

Pupils will leave Blaenhonddan, understanding the importance of how mathematics is used in our everyday lives and together with the knowledge and proficient application of skills, they will have firm foundations and mathematical resilience.

Vision Statement for Science & Technology

Scientific understanding is central to how we see our world.  It is our aim at Blaenhonddan to allow learners the freedom to experience and understand the life, movement and technology around them as lifelong learners in Wales and the wider world.

We do this by providing engaging learning experiences, which promote interest, enjoyment and allow for creativity through real life challenging and motivating experiences.

Learners will be encouraged to develop, acquire and apply the skills required to investigate and explore scientific questions, whilst developing a deeper understanding.

Learners will be challenged to recognise problems and find practical solutions to everyday problems.

Vision Statement for Humanities

At Blaenhonddan, it is our aim to give children a humanities curriculum which inspires them to become confident, creative and independent learners who can explore the use of different knowledge and skills through their learning, we aim to engage children in real life experiences both inside and outside of school through carefully planned educational visits, visitors, experiments and exploration to enhance their learning.

We want to awaken a sense of wonder which will fire the imagination and inspire learners to grow in knowledge, understanding and wisdom.  We want learners to engage and help shape the important issues facing humanity, including sustainability and social change.

We believe that R.E. both supports and strengthens what we aim to do in every aspect of school life – Our caring ethos and the value which we place on the development of the whole child; spiritually, morally, socially, culturally and intellectually is reflected in the agreed RVE curriculum.
